Diet Guide to Gastric Bypass Surgery

Pre-Op Diet

For 7-14 days prior to surgery a liquid diet has to be put into place to reduce the amount of fat around the liver and spleen. Not following this diet could result in the procedure being delayed or even cancelled.

During this time acceptable food choices are:

  • Protein or meal replacement shakes
  • Sugar free beverages
  • No caffeine or carbonation
  • Soup broth without any form of solid food
  • Vegetable juice

On some occasions surgeons may approve 1-2 servings of lean meat and vegetable meals daily, but the doctor will specifically determine whether this is an acceptable option or not.

After the Surgery

Once the surgery is complete the diet choices will gradually expand over the course of time. It’s very important that the instructions are followed in order for the body to properly heal from the surgery.

Normally these diet plans are spread out over the label of “stages”. These normally span over the course of 1-2 weeks.  

Stage 1- Clear Liquids

This is implemented for up to 7 days after the surgery process. This stage is made up of clear liquids such as: fat-free milk, sugar-free jello, water, and fat-free broth. It should be sipped very slowly with the main goal being to remain hydrated.

Stage 2- Pureed and Protein 

During week two and three of recovery the body will be able to process protein shakes and pureed foods. The portion sizes will be significantly smaller then what you may be used to on account of the stomach being much smaller now.

Protein shakes, egg whites, non-fat cottage/soft cheese are all examples that fall into acceptable dietary choices.

Stage 3- Soft Foods

This stage also takes around 1-2 weeks to complete, but this is the week that is introduced to soft foods. At this stage the patient can begin to eat lean turkey, lean chicken, and a variety of vegetables for an example of what is considered acceptable.

Again, portion sizes must be monitored and considered.

Stage 4- Real Food

This is the stage where real food, as in solid food, is reintroduced. It should be gradual baby steps that various foods are eaten and experienced once again. Eat slow and give your body ample time to properly adjust to the change.
